Room in Hickory, NC

Offered by Karen

My name is Karen and I'm just about to turn the big 6-0, but my brain thinks I am 35! I moved to Hickory in order to care for my elderly parents. They both suffered from dementia, which made it dangerous for them to be alone, making it next to impossible for me to leave the house for any length of time. I was their caretaker for 5 years, and unable to work outside of the house. My parents have both passed and I am now free to come and go when I please, but being seen as unemployed and getting older has now made it difficult to find a job. This means I'm at home most of the time, being a bit of a hermit. You'd need to be okay living with someone who is always at home. I have 2 cats that I've inherited from my parents, both are around 12 years old, and both are calm and sweet. One of them is deaf and the other has only one eye, and although they have access to the outdoors, they spend most of their time indoors, living like hermits too! I don't drink or do drugs, so I'd prefer it if you don't either. I'd like to share my home with a female preferably, and have it be someone closer to my age, rather than someone closer to their 20's. If we share things in common from how we were raised or to our past history, even better!

About the property

This is a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home with access to the back patio and yard through the dining room. The house is around 1350 square feet, the largest space being the primary bedroom, which would be for you! For easy access into the house, you'll be given your own remote to enter through the garage, where there is a ramp to take you up to the kitchen door. If you are a single parent with One child, I might be okay with that, depending on the child's age. The house is nestled at the bottom of a circular street, the neighborhood has well maintained homes, lots of outdoor property and trees, friendly neighbors, ranging from young couples, a few singles, families, older couples who have been here for years, and people like myself who are managing life on their own. It's really a quiet area, located in the Mountain View area.

What is your typical day off?

Since I am not employed, all of my days are days off, so I spend a lot of time in my Netflix and chill zone!

Why are you looking for a co-living situation right now?

Because I now have this large extra bedroom, I decided to rent it out to help me with my expenses, especially since I haven't yet found a job. Plus, living by myself gets to be quite lonely, so I'd love to have someone here that I could have a conversation with or share a laugh together!

Your ideal guest

You should be employed, have your own vehicle (parking is available), or some form of transportation for yourself. You'll need to be okay with living with cats in the house, but you don't have to allow them to come into your room. Unfortunately, I can't add any more pets into the mix as two is already enough! If you are a single parent with one child, I might be open to the idea of the two of you moving in, but it will probably depend on the age.

Can't live with

I can't have anyone who is loud or rude or abrasive, or someone who is messy and doesn't clean up after themselves. My previous roommate refused to do anything around the house, not even putting her dirty dishes in the dishwasher, or going outside to grab the mail! I'm looking for a pro-active type of person who would see a full kitchen trash can and throw the bag away into the larger bin in the garage. I need someone who likes things to be cleaned up and not messy in the house, and would be open to sharing some of the chores (like emptying the dishwasher or loading it or starting the robot vacuum when it looks like the floors need it, etc.). I just don't want someone who thinks of me as their live-in housekeeper and mail delivery person!
